Toshijima is famous for its top-notch “Toshijima Fatty Spanish Mackerel (Sawara)” This fish is handpicked and has to be caught by line fishing on the day of the auction, and it needs to have at least 10% fat. Because it’s pretty rare, most people get to enjoy it in the Ise-Shima area only. In the fall and winter, it gets especially rich, tasting a lot like medium-fatty tuna. You can savor its melt-in-your-mouth goodness as fresh sashimi or lightly seared.
