Japan is famous for its breathtakingly gorgeous four seasons.

The beautiful changes in nature like the dainty pink cherry blossom petals in spring and red leaves in fall are part of Japan’s charm.

Today we introduce the seasonal changes and seasonal activities you can enjoy in Japan!

The four seasons of Japan

One year is divided into 4 periods in Japan. Spring is from March to May,
summer is from June to August, September to November is fall, and December to February is winter.

The temperature and the climate change significantly depending on the season.

Spring

Spring is probably the most popular season in Japan, because it’s not too cold and not too warm.

It is also the season when cherry blossoms bloom, and there are a lot of cherry blossom viewing events held during this season.

The best timing for viewing cherry blossoms in Tokyo is around late March to early April.

Summer

Rainy season comes to Japan from the end of June to mid July, and the full-fledged summer comes to Japan in Mid July to late August.

During this period, the weather is not only hot, but also muggy. The sunshine gets intense too, causing some people to get sick.

Summer festivals and fireworks held at several places from July to August.

Fall

The summer heat gets weaker and the temperature goes down in fall.

The air gets drier compared to the summer, and probably winter is the 2nd popular after the spring.

Just like the spring, fall in Japan is known for its stunning view of autumn leaves color.

If you plan to visit Japan in fall, don’t forget to stop by Kyoto, Nara, and Nikko for their beautiful fall foliage.

Fall foliage events are also held in many areas, including mountains, parks, and the street.

Winter

The temperature drops more to its lowest in the winter, so make sure to dress warmly if you’re visiting Japan within this period.

The chill gets worse from the end of December, and from January to March, it’s possible for temperatures to drop below zero.

You’ll see snow in the Hokuriku, Tohoku, and Hokkaido areas. Sometimes it snows heavily even in Tokyo, depending on the year.

There are a lot of winter events like illuminations and snow festivals held in Japan within this period.

Japan is also famous for its high quality snow powder, so make sure to try some winter sports if you plan to visit Japan in the winter!
