Apr 06, 2020

The JR Yamanote Line (山手線, Yamanote-sen) is the most important train line in Tokyo, which connects Tokyo’s major city centers with its circular line.

JR Yamanote line

Today we introduce transfer options from Haneda Airport to major stations of the Yamanote Line.

There are two options to choose.

1st option: use the Tokyo Monorail and transfer to the JR Yamanote Line at Hamamatsucho Station (the blue line)

2nd option: use Keikyu (Keikyu Express) Line and transfer to the JR Yamanote Line at Shinagawa Station (the red line)

First, let’s compare the fare and the time needed for each line to reach each station on the JR Yamanote Line.

1 Tokyo Monorail

Haneda International Airport → Hamamatsucho Station
(15-20 minutes, 500 yen)

2 Keikyu Line

Haneda International Airport → Shinagawa Station
(11-13 minutes, 300 yen)

*Fares are for adults

If we compare this, the option no. 2, Keikyu (Keikyu Express) Line is the cheapest and the fastest transportation method you can use to go to Tokyo.

Cautions when using the Keikyu Line!

1 Some trains are bound to Yokohama area, not Tokyo.

*In this case, transfer to trains bound to Shinagawa area at Keikyu Kamata Station.

2 In addition to the JR Yamanote Line, there are a lot of train platforms for different JR trains at Shinagawa Station, including JR Keihin Tohoku Line, Tokaido Line, Sobu Line, and Yokosuka Line.

*At Hamamatsucho Station, there are only train platforms for the JR Yamanote Line and Keihin Tohoku Line.

3 Shinagawa Station is very spacious, so usually it takes longer time to transfer between trains.

If you’re visiting Japan for the first time, we suggest taking the Tokyo Monorail.

Tokyo Monorail runs at higher place compared to Bangkok’s BTS, so you can enjoy Tokyo’s best view while traveling to the city.

Transferring to the JR Yamanote Line is much easier at Hamamatsucho Station, as the station is not as big as Shinagawa Station.

There are also trunk spaces to store your suitcases inside the monorail.

Sometimes, you can also use the JR East Pass when taking the Tokyo Monorail.
