Best cherry blossom spots in Osaka

It is no exaggeration to say that cherry blossom season is the most wonderful time of the year in Japan, and many tourists visit the country to enjoy the beautiful view of the dainty pink petals, every year.

This year, the cherry blossoms in Osaka start blooming from late March, coming into full bloom as it gets closer to the beginning of April.

In this feature, we introduce some of the best spots all around Osaka where you can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms.

1. Katsuo-ji Temple

Katsuo-ji Temple, located in Mino City, is a temple built in the Heian era dedicated to victory and good fortune in academics, sports, and business. The temple is known for its ‘winning daruma’, a doll-like charms, which are believed to bring good fortune and success.

Other than good fortune, the temple is also famous for its stunning cherry blossom views. The temple grounds are home to both early and late blooming cherry blossoms, allowing the temple to provide a longer viewing season than other places.

2. Kema Sakuranomiya Park

Kema Sakuranomiya Park is a park located near the Kitahama financial district and the Osaka Securities Exchange, making it something of an urban oasis. The park spans 4.2 kilometers from the Kema overflow weir at the divergence of the Yodo and Okawa Rivers to Temma Bridge downstream.

In spring, there are rows of cherry trees from Tenma Bridge to Sakuranomiya Bridge (Ginbashi), featuring about 4,800 trees of the Yoshino, Yamazakura, and Sato-zakura species, which can be enjoyed from late March to mid-April.

3. Japan Mint

Japan Mint is one of the most popular cherry blossom spots in Osaka, and it is best known for its 560 meters promenade, which is dotted with more than 338 cherry trees from 134 varieties; mainly Yaezakura.

Located about a 15-minute walk from Osaka Tenmangu Station, the Japan Mint premises are not usually open to the public, but it’s open for a limited time only during the cherry blossom season.

The cherry blossom pass is usually held from early April to mid-April, and during that time, you can enter the promenade from the south gate. Avoid visiting the event on weekends and at night if you hate crowds, but visit on weekdays instead, as it’s relatively vacant during daytime.

4. Expo ’70 Commemorative Park

Mainly known for its “Tower of the Sun”, Expo ‘70 Commemorative Park was built by Taro Okamoto, a top-notch Japanese artist. The park is considered as one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom spots, featuring Higan-zakura and Kanhi-zakura that start blooming annually from mid March. Higashioji Street, a road that leads to the Tower of the Sun, is dotted with approximately 5,500 cherry trees from nine different varieties.

The park is easily accessible from Osaka Monorail’s Banpaku-kinen-koen Station, or Koen Higashiguchi Station. A cherry blossom festival is also held annually from late March to early April, and visitors can enjoy the cherry blossom until late at night as the park hours are extended to 21:00.

5. Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is known as one of Osaka’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors throughout the year. However, the castle is also known as one of the best spots for cherry blossom viewing in Osaka, featuring a 100 hectare park dotted with more than 3,000 cherry trees.

Located for a 15 to 20 minute walk from JR Osakajokoen Station, or Morinomiya Station, you can enjoy the cherry blossom views throughout its large garden, but the most beautiful viewing point is in the area near the moat on the south side of the castle tower.
