Tottori sand dunes and the sand museum
Dec 11, 2019
I’m sure you all have heard of so many great places to visit in Japan, including the great sand dunes in Tottori, right?
Although the sand dunes in Japan might not be as impressive as the Sahara, the contrasting color of the golden sand and the bright blue sky will definitely amaze you.
Tottori sand dunes
Tottori sand dunes are the biggest sand dunes in Japan; with over 16 kilometers in leng
th and 2 kilometers in width.
The accumulation of Mt. Daisen’s volcanic ash in Sendaigawa river formed these sand dunes.
Ocean currents and win brought the sand from the bottom of Sendaigawa river to the shore, rearranging their shapes for over 100,000 years.
Enjoying the exotic view of Tottori sand dunes is a very unique experience. Since it’s located near the ocean, Tottori sand dunes offer visitors a real superb view.
There are also many things you can do there; from walking around the sand dunes, to taking pictures of its beautiful nature.
If you’re looking for some adrenaline activities, you may want to try exciting activities like camel back-riding, sandboarding, paragliding, or even yoga!
You can also rent boots from the shop nearby, so your favorite pair of shoes won’t get dirty!
The sand museum
The sand museum is located near the Tottori sand dunes, and apparently it’s the one and only sand museum in Japan. At this museum, you can see many creative works created with sand and water only. At this museum, you can really see how much time and effort the artists have dedicated to the sand sculptures, as all of them are so beautiful, delicate, and of course, fragile. The contents of the exhibition at the museum usually change every year.
The theme of the previous exhibition was “World Tour on Sand”; including South America edition, Asia edition, Africa edition, and many more. Also, please take a note that the sand museum is only open from April to January.
