While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to try local sweets made from kuzu (葛) at “Nakai Shunpudo (中井春風堂),” located in front of Kinpusen-ji Temple. We recommend their “Honkuzu Mochi” and “Honkiri Kuzu,” which are best enjoyed within 10 minutes of being made!

6. Enjoy the Beauty of Mitarai Valley [ 29 July 2025 ]
Mitarai Valley, located in Tenkawa Village, is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Nara Prefecture. This area has been regarded as the center of Shugendo (修験道) since the priest En-no-Kyosha arrived at Mt. Omine around 1,300 years ago.
Mitarai Valley is the source of the river flowing from Mt. Omine, which is considered sacred by practitioners of Shugendo. It is renowned for having some of the cleanest water in the Kansai region. With temperatures that are about 3-5 degrees lower than the plains, this valley is an ideal spot for summer hiking.
Walking along the “Mitarai Yuhodo” trail, which leads from the entrance of the valley to “Dorogawa Onsen,” takes about three hours. Along the way, hikers can traverse an exciting suspension bridge, enjoy the enchanting atmosphere of the valley and its magnificent waterfall, and take in the stunning natural scenery. We recommend stopping at “Dorogawa Onsen” to relax after your hike before heading back.
In summer, visitors can experience the soothing sounds of waterfalls, refreshing natural mist, mysterious emerald waters, and vibrant green trees. So why not take the opportunity to experience these sights and sounds to refresh both your body and mind?
