Yamato-Koriyama City flourished as the town surrounding Koriyama Castle. From the late Edo period to the early Meiji period, it became a celebrated center for goldfish breeding, a tradition that continues today, earning it the nickname “Goldfish City.”

Take a leisurely stroll through the old town and experience the tranquil and inviting atmosphere of traditional Japan!

When it comes to the city’s famous sweets, be sure to try “Oshiro no Kuchi Mochi (御城之口餅).” This delightful treat features soft mochi dough wrapped around coarsely ground red bean paste, all coated in kinako powder. There are also many other popular Japanese sweets among the locals. For an even better experience, sit on the wooden terrace, enjoy the gentle breeze, and savor your delicious treats.

If you have a fondness for cute items, make sure to visit “Kochikuya (こちくや),” a souvenir shop offering goldfish-themed merchandise. The shop features a “Goldfish Scooping Workshop,” where you can try your hand at the traditional Japanese goldfish-scooping game. It’s a fun way to immerse yourself in the charm of Japanese culture!

After walking around, if you work up an appetite, don’t forget to stop by “Korokke no Hayashi (コロッケのはやし)” located in front of the station. Indulge in their delicious, freshly fried croquettes—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—a local favorite!
