How to find or call a taxi in Japan

Although Japan is known for its practical and useful transportation system. But there are chances where you need to use a taxi in Japan.

Trains and buses sometimes are not accessible after midnight. So you might need to grab a taxi when you miss the last train. Especially, when you need to go to the hospital in the middle of the night.

Most major train stations in Japan have taxis waiting outside for passengers. If you want one to pick you up at where you stay, or from somewhere else. You need to call for one.

1. Use the taxi-finder apps

One of the most convenient ways to find a taxi is by using the taxi-finder apps, which allow you to find a vacant taxi, dispatch the vehicle to a pick-up location, take you to the destination, and make cashless payments through your mobile phone.

2. Go to the nearest taxi stop

If you’re close to big train stations, or if you’re at a business facility, you can go to the nearest taxi stop. There are taxis waiting for passengers at the taxi stop, and once you’re in the taxi, you need to tell, or show the taxi driver where you want to go.

In case you don’t speak Japanese, the easiest way is to show the address on the official website, or the Google Map to the driver.

If you stay at an Airbnb facility, you might want to write down your address and take it with you all the time so you can show it to the taxi driver if you need to.

3. Ask someone to find a taxi for you

If you’re at a hotel, or other business facility, you can ask the hotel receptionist, or the information desk’s staff to help you grab a taxi.

Most hotels will do this for you, and all you need to do is to say “タクシーを呼んでください (takushii wo yonde kudasai)”, and show them the destination’s address so the staff can ask the taxi driver to take you there.

If you know the right way, finding a taxi won’t be as difficult as you think, but since taxi is very expensive in Japan, you might want to Google the estimated fare first before you jump on one and end up spending too much money just for a ride!
